Lady Dawgs out of state sectionals

The Mary Persons Lady Bulldogs lost 10-1 to Rutland Saturday afternoon in their third game in the south state sectionals in Dublin. It was the Lady Dawgs' second loss of the tournament, which ended their season. The Lady Dawgs beat Cairo 4-3 Saturday morning after losing their first game, 6-3, to Thomson Friday. MP finishes the 2008 season with a record of 20-15. The team won more games this season than ever before.

All season long the MP Lady Dawgs played with heart and determination and never gave up. Congratulations to this great group of girls on an exciting softball season.

Anonymous said...: that 2nd comment is quite ridiculous. why would they need a different coach? the lady dawgs may have been elminated out of state sectionals, but some of the girls were probably tired from playing about 63 games. wouldn't you? i'm proud of the girls, and the coaches. they played hard, and the coach made sure that the girls were well taken care of. sometimes it's not the coach, but the girls who can weaken a team. know your facts before making a bold comment like that.; October 27, 2008 at 4:28 PM

And the softball coaches can handle it, so how dare you insult us, as a softball team, because everyone has problems, if you have that many girls on one team. We got through it just fine! On to Dublin for Lady Dogs

The MP Lady Bulldogs fought a hard fight Thursday night against a tough Rutland team. Both games in the region championship tournament went into extra innings and were full of excitement. A large hometown crowd made the trek to Jackson to cheer on the team and the support was felt by all the girls. And they put on quite a show! The Lady Dogs came from behind in game one, thanks to a grand slam from Chandler Williams, to tie it up 8-8, but the Lady Hurricanes scored three more and won 11-8. In game two, the Lady Dogs played hard and fast but lost to Rutland 5-3. The Lady Bulldogs will be the number 2 seed int he state sectionals beginning at 4 p.m. Friday in Dublin. Good luck Lady Dogs!

Girls Ive been apart of countless games/tournaments over the past 7 years and I must tell ya, that was the most exciting one Ive ever witnessed. From Amber's stingy's defense, Kyla's gutty pitching performance, Chandler's bomb in the bottom of the 8th, Marleigh's hustle behind the plate, and everything in between. Thank you, Ya'll made me proud to be a part of the "Bulldog Nation".

Hats off to Rutland, they had to play a perfect 2 games to beat ya'll and to thier credit they did.

These ladies lay in all on the line and for what? For each other and for the love of the game; Certianly not for the fame. Most of the town doesnt even know that we have a team or how truly talented they are.One would've thought the newspaper wouldve been there, but I guess maybe they were too busy getting ready for the football game tonite.

Anonymous said...: I started every game this season, so I have plenty of credibility when I say this. At this school, football is not fun at all. We are overworked. We put so much work in and we get nothing out of it. We spend all summer in the weight room, go to camps and all that mess. I even had to drop Biology to take weight lifting so I could stay on the team. It is ridiculous. Lady Bulldogs beat Jackson, advance to championship game

Mary Persons is headed for its very first region championship game.
The Lady Bulldogs beat region rival Jackson, 6-4, Tuesday. Kyla Tanner pitched the complete game to get the win and set the school record for wins in a season as a pitcher. The win brings their overall record to 19-11 and advances them to the region 4AAA championship game, which will be played in Jackson at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9. The Lady Bulldogs will face the winner of the Jackson - Rutland game, which will be played at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Buy a football, Help Zapareo

The Mary Persons Touchdown Club and several local businesses have teamed up to help a former MP Bulldog. The group will be selling special limited edition Zapareo Glover souvenir footballs during the MP football game Friday night, Oct. 10, at Dan Pitts Stadium at Mitchell Field. The special gold and black footballs are decorated with Zapareo's name and #40 and will be available for a $5.00 donation. Get a special platinum football, also with MP and Zapareo's name and number for just a $10.00 donation. Look for the special bags with "Zap" on them full of these collectable footballs and help Zapareo.

Zapareo Glover is a 2005 MP graduate and former football player. He was shot in a carjacking in August and remains paralyzed. The bullet, which remains lodged in his back, left him paralyzed. He faces months, maybe even years, of medical treatment and therapy to recover. All proceeds from the sale of the souvenir footballs will go to Zapareo's medical expenses.

Anonymous said...: WOW! Simply amazing! "Back in the day" people didn't have the internet to use to broadcast how they feel about the unworthy coaching staff, or the team with no talent. Those people did their bickering and complaining to their family and friends. Now they can make it public for all to see - including the players! I'll bet the boys are ready and fired up to play this Friday after reading all of this! How on God's precious Earth can we expect these boys or the coaches to perform to the standards we(parents and fans) have set for them? I'm betting the coaches expectations of the boys have not changed too much - coaches expect boys to learn plays, exercise and build endurance, execute with precision and confidence, pay attention to the game, represent the team well on and off of the field, participate, drop the ball every now and then and learn from their mistakes, miss a tackle but learn what they did wrong, throw the ball into lala-land but review the play and learn how to react next time, understand that when two teams play one goes home a winner and one goes home a winner that just didn't execute as good and I could go on.
The expectations the parents and fans have really haven't changed much either. Ask Coach Pitts if he didn't go home many a night feeling the heat or the hair on his neck standing straight out. Ask him how many parents he talked to over the years that weren't happy with calls he made in discipline or in plays on the field. I don't think it's much different. People just have a new media that allows them the opportunity to tear people down while they let out their own pent up anger and animosity.
To the parents: please allow these coaches to do what they are expected to do. Lead, guide and direct your kids so they can learn discipline, respect and honor. If you are so dissatisfied with the job the coaches are doing then pull your kid off the team. It might just be the best thing that ever happened. You need to teach him to be tolerant and not a quitter! He needs to learn how to handle it, how to get up after making a mistake he knows he should not have made and shake it off. Let me tell you – if you are teaching him to be perfect and that anything less is not acceptable – you are in BIG trouble. There is only one man who ever walked this Earth that was perfect! Don’t expect your kid to be! Imagine what your kid is thinking - he wants to make you happy and proud of him; he also wants to be successful on the field, he also wants to work hard for the coaches and make them proud - but he's gotta listen to you gripe and complain about every little thing and then you expect him to go to practice the next day and be absolutely perfect making NO mistakes? You set him up for failure because he is human and he is going to make mistakes! He's out there hanging on every negative word you fed him about the coaches or the other players. Sure he's out there sweating with the best of them and he may not be getting the same amount of field time and sure it hurts his feelings, but he's a big boy Mama! And he certainly doesn’t need you to remind of him of it by complaining all the time. Don't you even get it? Don't you see what you are doing to him? You should be encouraging him to learn as much as he can and to stay committed and focused and to show respect at all times. That is what sports are all about. They are not about WINNING! Playing the game is about learning lessons that will stay with you forever!
To the fans who boo'd the team last week - you better just stay at home this week because we don't need you there! You should be ashamed of yourselves.
To the fans who are truly loyal and love the Bulldogs - yell your hearts out and don't give up. When those boys hear you screaming and hollering for them with SUPPORT, LOVE and PASSION it motivates them to do better for YOU, for their coaches and for themselves. If you shout out negativity you may as well be throwing eggs! Criticism can be given in a respectful constructive manner at an appropriate time which is not during the game on Friday night.
And finally to the coaches: you guys gotta keep it together! Coach Walker you are responsible for keeping your coaching staff in tact and holding them accountable. You set the level of expectation and standards. You are in control! Are you? Each one of you guys have a responsibility to lead, guide and direct our boys and to do it with honesty and integrity and with a spirit of caring and pride. Lift them up and don't beat them down. Hold them all equally accountable because on a TEAM - Together Everyone Achieves More! Please remember why you are doing this and stay focused. There was a coach “back in the day” that made a difference in your life and you still remember him. You remember because he taught you basic fundamental life lessons that helped build who you are today, your character. You play such an important role in these kids’ lives and you have so much influence over them. The influence you have on one player may not be the same as the lessons you are teaching another player. Each player is different. But they are all looking at you and how you act to them and to the others. They all deserve the opportunity for you to have a life long impact on their lives. Each one of them needs to be able to look back on this day and say they learned something from you. What will it be? What are you teaching them? Please don’t let the disgruntled fans or parents distract you and take you off course. You know what you have to do!

Dogs lose homecoming 23-16

The Mary Persons Bulldogs lost their homecoming game to Woodland, 23-16, Friday night. The last time the Bulldogs lost a homecoming game was in 2006. That year Northeast beat MP 21-7.

Anonymous said...: That's it i finally agree with Barak Obama on something, that it's time for a CHANGE the Mp coaches are what needs changin alot of people in here want to complain about Qb1 and other kids on the team well they are not the problem it's coachin plain and simple there simply is no discipline on the team and that reflects on coaching. when in game six you are still wasting time outs due to too many or too few players on the field that's coaching. when the team only runs a small grouping of plays that's coaching. and when a good diciplined coach like Chaffin is run outta town like a dawg that's poor fans. where are those Chaffin haters now cause i personally would like to see them get after the current coach with as much determination as they went after Chaffin with. Have they quit teaching basic english at MP or were you just drunk? Coach Chaffin is great guy. I played for him in the 80's when he first came to MP and was the tight end coach and equipment manager. I consider him a friend. that being said; I was glad when he lost the head coaching job. His players were jumping into the endzone, taking their helmets off, and just plain showboating. Going to the playoffs every year in a weak and watered down region means nothing.
As far as coach Walker's present effort I would have to agree that the execution on the feild is lacking. However, in his defense he is straddled with poor talent, an undersized QB, and no running threat. It's the same situation that coach Pitts dealt with for years and the main reason he only won 1 state championship. I saw terrible ball handling, defense ends not staying at home and cut back runs going for big yards and points, and passes lobbed over the heads of the offense line and flutter through the air like a wounded duck to end up in the first row of the visitors stands or the hands of a defensive player. Looks like the dogs are there to give the game away.The coaches wont even allow them to play great. Up the middle...duhhhh hasnt worked last week so why keep trying? They have many players how about using some? Do the coaches even know what they are doing? The bulldogs need better coaching with better ideas. Anonymous said...: At 5'10", 170 MP QB is same size if not bigger than past QB, Wilds, Peters, Burdette, Key, Edge, Elder, etc. When a team wins, everyone takes credit, but a loss is always the fault of coaches & team leaders, that's just the way it is and always will be. The '98 team that went to the dome with Chafin, was groomed & coached by Dan Pitts (an older coach), younger has nothing to do with it. Football is still the moneymaker for all the school's sport programs, and we continue to have a 1st class one. Fans should support these young players for their continued effort, even after being criticized constantly. These coaches are teaching character & life lessons that will stay with them the rest of their life. They could be out in the streets shooting someone over a car or drugs! Eagles Landing Fri nite.. Why did the coach decide not to play #4 and #28 as running backs. #24 is a great running back but wouldn't he have complimented with the other two guys. #28 is grinding back and very hungry for the end zone. #4 gives you the quickness and pizazz to hit the corners for good yards. Yes the coach is being very selfish and stupid when it comes to winning. This was a season to be undefeated but maybe he is taking teams lightly. A young coach coming into this God forsaken town would be eaten alive. I guess you are going to have to raise Dan Pitts from retirement to be satisfied but guess what the game has changed. There are new schemes everyday. You probably wouldn't be happy with him either. Think about it MP fans, you can't keep jumping from here and there, how can your football program build to greatness. Let the coach know to play your players with heart and the will to be the best. I am a C/O 94 grad but I don't want to see another Justin Elder. Anonymous said...: I am a faithful Dawg Fan who is at every game. I can tell you that it would be hard to play or coach with the fans we have now. I went to MP, played for MP back in the
80's. Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't remember the fans being so disloyal. We had our critics and Monday morning QB's but this is so sad. There is not a pro-team, college team or high school team of any kind or sport that can survive without it's fans. At the Jackson game people were leaving the stands in the 3rd quarter, people were booing Friday night. The players hear this and see this. I have heard several make comments about it. People from other towns are talking about what bad and disloyal fans we are. GET OFF THE QB's BACK. You don't win or lose with one player. We need to teach these kids that. I am assuming that alot of these post are coming from parents of some of the players. How can these boys learn to be loyal teammates with the messages they get from their parents and other adults. I hear the coach can't even reprimand a player without a Daddy getting in his face. A bad attitude is like a disease, it spreads. We've got one at MP. I love my team and my school. Alright what then?..play a #1 or #2 from a another region and it'll be 1 and done. (at best)Seems like the coaches would have to know this(but sheez with this group, maybe not)but if they do know this, one would think they would start to allow some of the younger players to get some work in, so maybe they wont be in this same situation next year. it's just a thought.

If you really played in the 80's then we played together. I remember losing two state championship games and one south ga championship game and distinctly remember our fans and even our team blaming one player, that droped a touchdown pass against West Rome, for losing that game and ruining our championship season. I guess you have a kid on the team and want to protect him against criticism. Being a loyal fan is loving your team even when they are doing bad but having the character to let them know that they are doing bad. And as far as going to the GA dome all those years with short QB's, did they win the state championship? That's exactly why MP has gotten soft. We use to never be satisfied with 2nd place, even though thats the best we ever did. The kids playing now have more talent, better equipment, better facilities, and a larger fan base. I mean really....you are losing by 7 with 1 minute to play, you've got 3rd and 10 and YOU RUN IT UP THE MIDDLE??? Are you kidding me?? I agree with the comment about there not being any discipline on the team. I will also throw out that there seems to be no respect either. I saw several helmets where the gold was chipped and torn. When Coach Pitts was there, all helmets were painted and all cleats were polished the night before the game. Coach Pitts taught respect and discipline. Some times they look like they have no idea what they are doing. The team were one for all and all for one. I don't see that anymore. Hate to see the Dawgs get soft. You are right we do have talent. I played in the 80's and was on the state championship team and I know how it feels to only lose 3 games in 4 years. The fans loved us because we loved the coach and the team. Blocking for a fellow team mate was not an assignment it was an honor. Looking at films on Sunday was a time of honor when the coach would call out my name or my teammates name and say great job that’s the way to do it. I never recall Pitts telling players in a loss that they were stand outs, especially when one of those players contributed two costly turnovers.
Someone asked about the fans and I will say the fans are the parents and friends of those playing. If the players are not being treated fairly then they look on with skepticism. It's hard to cheer for unfair leadership; it’s hard to cheer for mundane play calling and most of all it's hard to be enthusiastic about double standards.
Communication is rapid these days and maybe the Coach should be aware that when you show
deference to one player and slight another, it's no longer in a vacuum. The report is just a phone call away and the same groups you want to cheer for you are now looking at you as suspect. What fans want is the team to be respected and treated fairly. The do not expect to go to a B Team game for two years and see those starters relegated to support roles when they get to varsity. The problem is that the fans only back the team and coaches when they are winning. Anonymous said...: Pride Requires Motivation. Think about it...when most of us played for Pitts job security was a week by week basis. No matter who you were and the fact that you were good enough to hold on to it made you proud. That's why nobody took being on the team for granted not even the parents. Politics gets people dirty, from the firing of Chafin to the hiring of Walker you can argue...Politics.
High School football has changed but what makes a winning program has not. Look a Southwest Macon a team that three years ago looked like the Keystone Cops and now because of coaching has become a formidable team. Why, because the coach instilled pride, he benched seniors, treated them fairly and the buzz around Macon is they are and upstart winning program.
Pride has always been linked to two things and they are discipline and fairness. So it is easy to equate that is when a team lacks pride, there is also a lack of dicipline and fairness. Both comes from coaching!!!; October 7, 2008 at 12:29 PM

When there is a lack of athletic ability anyway, a winning team is going to take time to develop. It requires dedication, hard work, and lots of heart from our kids. As far as discipline goes, why is it that parents aren't held to the fire just like a coach?...when you make excuses for your kids and their actions, what do you expect? How can the coach get loyalty and respect when the parents are griping about how unfair something is? The people that are posting about unfairness, are you at any of the practices? All those kids have a fair shot to hustle and be aggressive, some simply won't do it and they probably have parents that make excuses for them. It was known when Pitts coached that he would be their "Daddy" for as long as they chose to wear his bulldog uniform. He was tough on them but he was there for them when they needed him to. But he had pride too. I am not sure that these coaches have pride. You learn with what you see, a known fact with kids.
As far as backing coaches and players only when winning I have been a fan my whole life grew up here and don't know anything else. We need for our "Bulldog Nation" to get back its pride. Plain and simple fact if we are going to get back on top.; October 7, 2008 at 4:10 PM

Some whine and when they do even if their kid walks off the team the mother comes and then the father to lobby on those kids behalf. I wish that all parents supported their kids but it's not that simple. Some parents have never seen a game or practice because they are at work. It's the kids who have nobody to look over them that get messed over. Some get kicked off the team and some don't for the exact same thing stay on. I can remember almost annually a player getting kicked off the team by coach Pitts and they had to earn their way on. His rules were fair not uneven in administration and well understood. Maybe if the coaches posted a code of ethics for the team and strictly adhered to it no matter who violated it just simply administered punishment fairly. it may erase the suspicions who knows?; October 7, 2008 at 9:09 PM

We arent the "new comers" who went to MA and are now MP backers. I agree with the comment about discipline & pride. If you got into trouble with Coach Pitts you had to run flagpoles. If it was very serious, you were kicked off of the team. Period. No discussion. If you look at the home stands...they are filled every week, every year. So dont go saying that MP fans are not loyal. When we get beat by a better team...I can take that. There is no difference between now and "back in the day" except discipline, hard work, and the selflessness it takes to be a team player. I'm not sure if some guys are playing because of who there daddy is or if they are playing because there is simply no one any better. I hope it's the latter and the best guys for the job are on the field. All I know is what I've seen and there is definitly a lack of talent at the skilled positions and the kids can not compensate for that because of poor execution. Who is responsible for that poor execution? We can't blame the kids because they are just trying their best and their only highschoolers. We can't blame the coaches because they are under paid. Anonymous said...: WOW! Simply amazing! "Back in the day" people didn't have the internet to use to broadcast how they feel about the unworthy coaching staff, or the team with no talent. Those people did their bickering and complaining to their family and friends. Now they can make it public for all to see - including the players! I'll bet the boys are ready and fired up to play this Friday after reading all of this! How on God's precious Earth can we expect these boys or the coaches to perform to the standards we(parents and fans) have set for them? I'm betting the coaches expectations of the boys have not changed too much - coaches expect boys to learn plays, exercise and build endurance, execute with precision and confidence, pay attention to the game, represent the team well on and off of the field, participate, drop the ball every now and then and learn from their mistakes, miss a tackle but learn what they did wrong, throw the ball into lala-land but review the play and learn how to react next time, understand that when two teams play one goes home a winner and one goes home a winner that just didn't execute as good and I could go on.
The expectations the parents and fans have really haven't changed much either. Ask Coach Pitts if he didn't go home many a night feeling the heat or the hair on his neck standing straight out. Ask him how many parents he talked to over the years that weren't happy with calls he made in discipline or in plays on the field. I don't think it's much different. People just have a new media that allows them the opportunity to tear people down while they let out their own pent up anger and animosity.
To the parents: please allow these coaches to do what they are expected to do. Lead, guide and direct your kids so they can learn discipline, respect and honor. If you are so dissatisfied with the job the coaches are doing then pull your kid off the team. It might just be the best thing that ever happened. You need to teach him to be tolerant and not a quitter! He needs to learn how to handle it, how to get up after making a mistake he knows he should not have made and shake it off. Let me tell you – if you are teaching him to be perfect and that anything less is not acceptable – you are in BIG trouble. There is only one man who ever walked this Earth that was perfect! Don’t expect your kid to be! Imagine what your kid is thinking - he wants to make you happy and proud of him; he also wants to be successful on the field, he also wants to work hard for the coaches and make them proud - but he's gotta listen to you gripe and complain about every little thing and then you expect him to go to practice the next day and be absolutely perfect making NO mistakes? You set him up for failure because he is human and he is going to make mistakes! He's out there hanging on every negative word you fed him about the coaches or the other players. Sure he's out there sweating with the best of them and he may not be getting the same amount of field time and sure it hurts his feelings, but he's a big boy Mama! And he certainly doesn’t need you to remind of him of it by complaining all the time. Don't you even get it? Don't you see what you are doing to him? You should be encouraging him to learn as much as he can and to stay committed and focused and to show respect at all times. That is what sports are all about. They are not about WINNING! Playing the game is about learning lessons that will stay with you forever!
To the fans who boo'd the team last week - you better just stay at home this week because we don't need you there! You should be ashamed of yourselves.
To the fans who are truly loyal and love the Bulldogs - yell your hearts out and don't give up. When those boys hear you screaming and hollering for them with SUPPORT, LOVE and PASSION it motivates them to do better for YOU, for their coaches and for themselves. If you shout out negativity you may as well be throwing eggs! Criticism can be given in a respectful constructive manner at an appropriate time which is not during the game on Friday night.
And finally to the coaches: you guys gotta keep it together! Coach Walker you are responsible for keeping your coaching staff in tact and holding them accountable. You set the level of expectation and standards. You are in control! Are you? Each one of you guys have a responsibility to lead, guide and direct our boys and to do it with honesty and integrity and with a spirit of caring and pride. Lift them up and don't beat them down. Hold them all equally accountable because on a TEAM - Together Everyone Achieves More! Please remember why you are doing this and stay focused. There was a coach “back in the day” that made a difference in your life and you still remember him. You remember because he taught you basic fundamental life lessons that helped build who you are today, your character. You play such an important role in these kids’ lives and you have so much influence over them. The influence you have on one player may not be the same as the lessons you are teaching another player. Each player is different. But they are all looking at you and how you act to them and to the others. They all deserve the opportunity for you to have a life long impact on their lives. Each one of them needs to be able to look back on this day and say they learned something from you. What will it be? What are you teaching them? Please don’t let the disgruntled fans or parents distract you and take you off course. You know what you have to do!

When do you suggest it is the right time or age to tell people that you do not agree with what they are doing or the way they are doing something? What is wrong with constructive critism? Moving on to Woodland

OK, time to put Jackson behind us and move on. This Friday night the Bulldogs play Woodland for Homecoming. That may prove to be a dangerous pick for the homecoming game. Woodland only won two games last year, its very first year in existence. But the Wolfpack is coming on strong in 2008. After losing its first two games of the season, Woodland won the next three region games and is in second place in region 4AAA. What must the Bulldogs do to defeat the Wolfpack. You tell us!
