Are the coaches playing the best players?

There have been comments made from time to time that the MP football coaches only play favorites and kids whose parents are in the Touchdown Club. An anonymous comment on a previous post said "The coaches need to stop showing favoritism and let the best athletes play and not the ones who parents contribute the most money to the Bulldog circle and until that happens Mary Persons football will not be the same. Bottom line play your best athletes."
But, there are never any specifics. So, if that's true.... who is not playing that should be?

If you honestly believe that a coaches do not play the best players you are crazy. The idea that a coach would look at someone and say "You give me the best chance to win but I am not going to play you because your parents do not contribute enough to the booster club" is crazy. These coaches get paid to win. They will put the best players out there to win. The only exception is if the player does not do what they are supposed to do in the school building or on the practice field.

I must be crazy because that is the way it is, the coachs don't say it but it most certainly is done. They may get paid to win but they also have to make the touchdown club happy or they will may life miserable for them.

Why is it that your best athlete is not a the QB position, that is very obvious. The coach stated last week in the reporter that he had to keep everything basic with his QB if that is the case why don't you give one of your althletes a chance at it,because if you were at the game last Friday you know the if it was not for the receiver making be plays and taking the ball from the defender a couple of times it would have been a bad night for the QB. I played for coach Pitts and if you were not able to make plays at the QB position than you would not be the QB and he sure would not have made the statement or played a guy at QB if he had to keep everything basic so open your eyes guys.

Hey MP fans..don't look now but while y'all are griping we're 2-0, overcoming seven turnovers to beat a solid Morgan County team and dismantling Lamar County, finally removing the bad taste in our mouths from two years ago.
Go Bulldogs.. and thanks Reporter for this blog and your awesome sports coverage!

I am an active member of the Touchdown Club who is not in a position to help the team out financially with "big bucks" so I donate my time. What is being posted here in regards to playing the kids whose parents donate money is simply not true. Obviously the blogger does not attend MP Touchdown Club meetings. If they did, he/she would know that many of the TD Club members have children who have graduated or have kids who are of the elementary school age. Our common goal is that we love MP football and want to make it the best program possible. The Touchdown Club is a support group for the team. We handle the business matters for the team, make sure that there are volunteers to feed the team, plan events, work in the Dawg House, etc.. We don't discuss issues such as who plays and who doesn't, nor do we discuss what happens on the field or personnel issues. We encourage all of our parents and community members to attend our meetings. The next meeting is Tuesday, September 9, at 6:30, at the MP Freshman Campus. If you truly feel that the best players are not on the field, I encourage you to make an appointment with the Coaching Staff to discuss your concerns.

My name is Mark Dye and I have been the President of the Mary Persons Touchdown Club for two years. I would like to respond to some of the posts on this blog concerning the TD club and our activities.

I am not a native of Forsyth. However, I am a native Georgian. I was born in Athens (many years ago) and grew up in Augusta. My wife’s family is from Waycross where she was born and raised.

I am proud to be associated with the TD Club. Let me assure you that the TD club has nothing to do with the football team’s operations. We do not suggest anything to the coaching staff concerning football. The coaching staff has no idea how much money any member gives to the club and it is none of their business. None of our largest donors (The Pitts Club) have a member on the varsity, JV, or C-team. For anyone to suggest that players receive playing time on the field based on their donations to the TD club is ludicrous. Our largest member group is the Mitchell Club and the vast majority of them (including me) give the money to help the team and to obtain a parking pass behind the home side of Pitts Stadium.

I would like to let you know what the TD Club actually does accomplish. Most schools in the Atlanta area and many of the schools we play require football players to pay up to $400.00 just to have the opportunity to play on the team. The TD club donates money, time, and services to the players to keep them from having to pay to play. The TD club paid for over 20 players to attend summer camp at Middle Georgia College at no cost to the players. We sponsored the Summer Camp the players attended and helped prepare, serve, and clean up for all the meals. The TD Club provided over 170 cases of water and 100 cases of PowerAde for the summer camp. The TD club pays for the players/coaches pre-game and post-game meals. The pre-game meals are held in the school’s cafeteria and post-game meals for far away games may be Wendy’s hamburgers or something similar. We sponsor and pay for the football banquet for both the varsity and C-teams. Every Thursday afternoon we provide the football players a hamburger cookout after practice is complete. We provide football chain crews for the JV and C-team games and also man and supply the Dog House for MP supporters to get souvenirs. This year players have had to pay $10.00 for summer camp and $18.00 for a travel t-shirt and that is all. As President, each Friday night after a football game I go into the MP Field house and ask the coaches if there is anything the program needs for the next week. We are in the business of supporting the MP football program along with every player on every team.

Through our various fund raising activities (Vidalia onion sales, membership dues, Bar B Que, sign sponsorships, and golf tournament) we raised over $60,000.00 dollars last year and we put all that money back into the football program. We have also opened a bank account to support Zapareo Glover and his medical expenses. Zapareo was a Mary Persons Bulldog and we all are praying for his full and speedy recovery.

If you would like to see what really goes on at a Touchdown Club meeting, please join us at 6:30pm in the cafeteria of the 9th grade Academy on Tuesday nights. Our next meeting will be Tuesday night, September 16 at 6:30pm. You will see what really is accomplished and how much work these folks give to the football program. We welcome all to the MP Touchdown Club.

And just who is the best athlete? If its who I think it is, then who would be there for him to throw it to?

To the "case closed" comment. #16 is doing a great job. He is being asked by his coaches to do one of the hardest jobs on the field with the added pressure of fans like you always on his case. Could "case closed" withstand pressure like that. If you went to any practices the qb job was open, very few players want it. The ones who are doing it have guts. There are faster and stronger players than #16, they are being used in other positions. Any football fan knows the qb is not always the fastest guy on the team. Get a clue and good job #16!!

Amen! #16 is doing a great job, and so is everyone else! To the one who thinks he/she must be crazy: I am involved with the TD Club and I would LOVE to be able to pay big bucks for my son to play but that isn't how it works. My son isn't ready. He isn't mature enough. There are two guys ahead of him for the same position. I have accepted the fact that he may not play until his Sr. year. As long as he is happy and enjoying football, I am happy for him. I hope your son isn't going to practice upset that he isn't starting. Be encouraging and try to enjoy the games, and cheer for the team. I know how hard it is to sit in the stands and want your child to be on the field, but it's part of life's lessons. By all adults showing a great attitude for those that do play, we are demonstrating that we are mature and have class. These kids need our support regardless of whether they are starters or not. Think about our sports programs at MP- I would have loved to have had this caliber of program in my high school!
